Bananas!

Speaking of karpas and berakhot, I've heard that Elizabethan Jews had trouble remembering that the correct berakhah for bananas was bore peri ha-adamah. The local rabbi instituted that one year everyone use bananas for karpas. The only thing that I hate more than bananas is bananas dipped in salt water.

Well, then, dip them in honey. The dipping incurs an obligation to wash one's hands, and honey would incur as much of an obligation as (salt)water. Or use wine.

The seven liquids that incur an obligation to wash are:
י"ד שח"ט ד"ם

יין (wine, including vinegar)
דבש (honey)

שמן (oil)
חלב (milk)
טל (dew)

דם (blood-- don't ask!)
מים (water, including saltwater)

That's interesting. Many communities use lemon juice rather than salt water. How would that incur an obligation to wash then?

It wouldn't. It is clear from the Gemoro that fruit juices do not incur an obligation to wash. Perhaps those communities do not wash before the vegetables, but rather, eat them immediately after Qiddusho.
